Bixby Wind Ensemble
and
Bixby Symphonic Winds

The Bixby Wind Ensemble and Bixby Symphonic Winds are premier fifty-member honor ensembles comprised of the most accomplished high school musicians at Bixby High School. Membership is earned through a rigorous audition process that evaluates technical proficiency, musicality, preparation, and commitment to excellence. While the majority of students are upperclassmen, exceptionally talented and mature underclassmen are welcomed into these ensembles when they demonstrate the artistry and discipline required to perform at this level.

These ensembles are dedicated to the performance of significant traditional and contemporary wind band literature. Students engage with cornerstone masterworks of the repertoire while also exploring cutting-edge compositions, including commissioned works written specifically for Bixby musicians. Through this balanced approach, members develop a deep understanding of the historical foundations of wind music while actively contributing to its future.

The Bixby Wind Ensemble and Bixby Symphonic Winds serve as flagship performing groups for the Bixby Band Program. They proudly represent Bixby Public Schools at state and regional concerts, festivals, and adjudicated events, consistently earning superior ratings and recognition for musical achievement. Beyond awards, the true distinction of these ensembles lies in their pursuit of meaningful music-making and their embodiment of professionalism both on and off the stage.

Bixby Symphony Band
and
Bixby Concert Band

The Bixby Symphony Band and Bixby Concert Band serve as the high school’s intermediate concert ensembles. Students are placed in these groups through a comprehensive audition and evaluation process designed to assess individual musicianship, technical development, and readiness for advanced repertoire. These ensembles provide a critical bridge in the artistic growth of Bixby band students, preparing them for the demands of the program’s premier honor ensembles.

Instruction within these ensembles emphasizes the continued refinement of core fundamentals — tone production, intonation, balance and blend, rhythmic precision, and expressive phrasing. Students develop increased musical independence while strengthening ensemble awareness and performance confidence. Rehearsals focus not only on technical accuracy but also on cultivating mature listening skills, stylistic understanding, and disciplined rehearsal habits.

The repertoire performed by the Symphony Band and Concert Band is drawn from robust and diverse concert band literature. Students engage with traditional masterworks, contemporary compositions, and educationally rich selections that challenge their technical ability while expanding their musical vocabulary. Through these works, members build endurance, artistry, and a deeper appreciation for the wind band tradition.

As integral components of the Bixby Band Program, these ensembles perform at concerts, district and state events, and community appearances, proudly representing Bixby Public Schools while continuing their progression toward musical excellence.

Bixby Percussion Ensembles

The award-winning Bixby Bands Percussion Department is under the direction of Mr. Geoffery Anikienko. In their respective band class, students are expected to build an understanding of basic to advanced concepts and techniques relating to both concert and marching percussion. Each summer and fall, all percussion students perform in the “Pride of Bixby Marching Band ” either as a member of the battery percussion or front ensemble. At the conclusion of the marching season, students have the option of participating in Bixby Bands Concert Season. All percussionists are encouraged to audition for the Honor Band and to participate in the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Solo and Ensemble assessment each year. Additional opportunities for performance vary from year to year. Typically at the conclusion of each year, the entire Percussion Program will present a recital of soloists and mixed percussion ensembles.
